An inmate at Mountjoy Prison has died after being attacked at the jail.

Robert O'Connor, who was in his 30s, was taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment following the assault on Friday evening. However, it has since been confirmed that he's died.

The scene was technically examined and an incident room was been established at Mountjoy Garda Station.

A post-mortem is scheduled to take place later today and Gardaí say the results of the exam will determine the course of their investigation.

The Irish Prison Service says the incident continues to be investigated by the IPS and Gardaí.

Stephen Breen, crime editor with the Irish Sun, says it happened just two days into the prisoner's sentence;

"Convicted criminal Robert O'Connor was attacked by, Gardaí believe by three other inmates. He suffered a very vicious beating. He was brought to the Mater Hospital and had been held in the intensive care unit but in the early hours of this morning his life support machine was turned off and he passed away."
