Students who fail higher level papers in their Leaving Cert may still be awarded CAO points under new proposals.

Plans being brought to cabinet by the Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan tomorrow will see points awarded to students receiving grades between 30 and 39 per cent.

Until now, any grade under 40 per cent was considered a fail.

The new system will be introduced for next September's fifth year students.

Irish Times Education Columnist Brian Mooney says it's designed to encourage more pupils to take on Higher Level subjects.

The jury is due to be sent out today in the assisted suicide trial of a Tallaght woman, more here.
