Dublin’s newest park is coming closer to reality.

Plans for Chocolate Park have been in the pipeline since 2004 but today, officials briefed local councillors on what will be in the space near Sir John Rogersons Quay.

There will be seating and green areas which designers say will make use of the sunnier parts.

But its unique feature will be the children’s play area, which will be suspended on top of a crane, similar in design to those used in the docklands.

Deirdre Scully is from Dublin City Council:

“The idea is to provide something that’s distinctive and different. And different to the other parks that are in the area, we don’t want every park to have the same set of equipment so that it caters to all ages”.

Independent Councillor Mannix Flynn was delighted the project has moved forward:

“Community deserve this particular park and it’s a different type of park with a different approach and new equipment”.

However, Fine Gael’s Kieran Binchy wasn’t sure about the name of the park:

“Just thinking of health, just reinforcing chocolate with children isn’t good”.

Officials hope to lodge the planning application by the end of this week and will put it out to public consultation.

It’s hoped that a decision will be made by early next year.
