Gardaí have mounted patrols outside a new centre for asylum seekers in Ballsbridge over fears the building could be targeted.

Families seeking international protection are due to be housed in the former nursing home at Pembroke Park in the coming days.

The 220 bed facility, that includes 40 rooms, sits beside St Conleth's College private school and close to Herbert Park.

A small number of anti-refugee protestors gathered outside the site yesterday afternoon according to the Irish Daily Mail.

It comes after an empty building in Ringsend, that was the scene of anti-immigration demonstrations, was set on fire on New Year's Eve.

Up to 14 homeless families were due to be housed at the disused pub.
