The Health Minister's looking at allowing drug users in nightclubs or at festivals to check whether their party pills, or other synthetic substances, are mixed with potentially lethal ingredients.
Leo Varadkar has revealed he's considering the radical proposal which would require a change in the law.
But he insists he's not saying it's OK to take drugs
It follows the death of 18 year old Alex Ryan last week, after taking the powdered substance N Bomb at a house party in Cork.
The measure is in place in other countries such as Canada and the plan is being looked at here as part of the drawing up of a new national drugs strategy for 2017.
Minister Varadkar says 'We know from years of experience that education on its own does not work. People need to be aware that when it comes to anything bought over the Internet or on the street they don't really know what they are taking.'
He added 'much as we may like to believe it, just telling people not to experiment with drugs has not proven effective for decades.'
