A Pakistani man has been found guilty of raping a woman with down syndrome in his Dublin flat.
The victim’s family cried in court as the verdict was read out.
The Judge said the case was an example of how very bad things can happen to very good people.
Faisal Ellahi from the Haripur region of Pakistan had denied the rape of the woman with down syndrome. It was the Prosecution’s case that she had become separated from her mum during a jog in June 2013 and he lured her back to his Dublin flat.
He claimed the sexual contact was consensual and the victim enjoyed it. But the jury didn’t believe him and after 2 hours and 41 minutes of deliberations they found him guilty of rape. Judge Tony Hunt told the jury their decision was absolutely correct.
He said it was absolutely ludicrous to think the victim could have given consent.
He said the accused tried to fool the jury and congratulated them at not falling for it. It said it was a terribly difficult case and excused them from jury duty for 20 years.
The victim’s family, who have been present for every day of this 22 day trial, cried when the verdict was read out.
