Police say the suspect in a school shooting in the US has been found dead with a gunshot wound.

The shooter, identified as 18-year-old Karl Halverson Pierson, shot one student before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.

Two others are injured after the shooting at the high school in Colorado yesterday.

The gunman broke into Arapahoe High School in Centennial, a suburb of Denver, apparently looking for one teacher in particular.

Authorities descended on the school after news of the shooting broke, on the eve of the one year anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut.

The shooting also occurred roughly 10 miles from Littleton, where 12 students and one teacher were killed in a rampage at Columbine High School in April 1999.

The high school has a student population of 2,200 students and is part of the Littleton Public Schools system.
