One Billion A Year Needed To Solve Housing Crisis

A billion Euro a year is needed to solve the housing crisis.

That’s according to one homeless campaigner who says drastic action is needed to tackle the problem

Father Peter McVerry made the call as he launched his trust’s pre-budget submission.

During the business breakfast with public spending minister Brendan Howlin, the campaigner called for an audit of Dublin’s empty buildings to see if they can be used for social housing.

He also added that the Government need to put money into a long term building programme.

It comes as another housing charity is calling for a revamp of the rent supplement scheme in the budget.

Threshold say people are paying illegal top-ups to landlords because the rent supplements aren’t covering the full costs anymore.

Both charities will be looking to Tuesdays Budget to see what measures and changes are brought in
