The number of families listed as homeless by South Dublin County Council has jumped dramatically.

298 families are on the council's books, 100 more than this time last year, with a total of 628 people  homeless in the county.

Social Democrats councillor Dermot Looney obtained the figures.

He says the situation is stark, but the solution is clear.

"It is 100% not a normal situation for Ireland," he said.

"It's not a normal situation for any country to have the amount of people registered homeless and then the amount of kind of unofficial homeless who aren't covered in these statistics who are staying with friends, staying with relatives and so on."

"It's not a normal situation. It's a situation that's been stark and clear for many years and we need to address it now simply by building more homes," he added.
