A new HIV prevention programme is set to stop more than 100 new cases of the virus in the next five years.

It's been announced the PrEP programme is to be rolled out by the HSE this year.

This comes as 513 people were diagnosed with HIV in Ireland last year.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis is a form of HIV prevention, the medication is taken by people who may be at risk.

More than seven thousand people are living with the virus in Ireland, according to HIQA.
