Cyclists could soon get into the city faster – without breaking any traffic lights.

A city councillor’s put forward a proposal that could see anyone on two wheels, travelling at a certain speed, get green lights all the way into town.

Greenwave is already in place in Copenhagen and Fine Gael’s Paddy Smyth is hoping it can be introduced here in Dublin.

It will allow cyclists, who’re travelling at 20 kilometres an hour, to get a clear, green light run, into the city centre.

He explained how it would work:

“If you do hit 20 kilometres an hour, you will hit every greenwave from the outskirts of the city into the city centre. It saves five to six stops per commute, it increases average cycle speeds by 21 percent on the way in. And then it’s alternated in the evening times to favour people coming out of the city. It has a negligible effect on car and bus transit times.”

Independent Councillor Mannix Flynn thought it was a great idea:

“I don’t see anything in the report saying we can’t do this. I mean limited, what does limited mean, limited edition. So I’d see this as a positive, I don’t see them saying no it can’t be done.”

The proposal has been sent to the next meeting of the Transportation SPC, which will happen on May 5th.
