Gardaí investigated 106 spiking incidents in 2022 - twice as many as the year before.

62 cases of drink and needle spiking were probed in 2021, while 12 were investigated in 2020.

The true figure is believed to be even higher, as many people do not report drinks tampering.

The figures were released to Sinn Féin TD, Mark Ward, through parliamentary questions.

The Dublin Mid West TD is calling for an awareness campaign aimed at industry employees - such as bar staff and bouncers.

The campaign would educate staff the signs and symptoms to look out for.

In response, the Justice Minister noted the increase in funding by government to combat domestic, sexual and gender based violence, in Budget 2023.

Funding increased by 22%, to €9 million.

Simon Harris said, "We are committed to implementing in full the commitments set out in Zero Tolerance – Third National DSGBV (domestic sexual and gender-based violence) Strategy. An important part of this work will be on raising awareness of many DSGBV issues."

Mr. Harris urged anyone "who may have been a victim or witness to an assault or sexual assault to report it to the Gardaí."
