It's claimed almost 1,200 clamps have been illegally removed from cars in 2015, by drivers after they've been immobilised.

According to The Irish Mirror, the practice has become more frequent due to motorists refusing to pay on street fines.

It's not an easy thing to do, but an estimated 3 drivers a day are using angle grinders and even hacksaws to remove the clamps.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council says all such incidents are pursued, and there are a number of prosecutions for criminal damage pending.

In 2014, over 56,000 vehicles were clamped, raising €4.2 million for the council in fines. The most clamped street in Dublin is Merrion Square West.

Clampers are busiest between the hours of 8 and 9am and 1 to 2pm. Their quietest time is between 3 and 4pm.
