More than 20 trees, some over a century old, have been felled on Dublin's Griffith Avenue due to public safety concerns, according to the local authority.

Dublin City Council says it identified 24 trees in such poor condition it was recommended they be removed before wind and storm events this autumn.

A report highlighted that some of the trees were showing significant signs of decay, fungal infections, structural defects and cavities.

Experts said the trees couldn't be allowed to remain on the busy road, where there are 5 schools as well as churches and bus routes.

Green Party Councillor, Donna Cooney, said there's been confusion around why the trees were removed.

She said residents has been in contact with her, believing the trees were cut down for cycle lanes or because of the development site near where some were located.
