The Cabinet is set to discuss new laws to improve rights for victims of crime.

If enacted, the Victims Rights Bill would allow people to question why the Director of Public Prosecutions decides not to take a case.

The legislation would also mean that victims would automatically be told when a criminal is being released from jail without having to make a formal request.

Last year, the Victims Rights Alliance criticised the level of information given by Gardaí to those affected by crime and this bill is to help improve that.

New staff are expected to be hired by the DPP's office to handle extra requests for information once the legislation goes through.
