A lawsuit over the copyright ownership of a selfie taken by a monkey has been settled out of court.

The photographer - whose camera was used to take the photo of the crested macaque - agreed to donate 25% of future revenue to charities dedicated to protecting the species.

PETA was suing David Slater on behalf of the monkey - who's named Naruto.

A lower court in the US had previously ruled in Mr Slater's favour, but the settlement brings the battle to an end.

In a statement, both PETA and David Slater said they agreed that the case raised "important, cutting-edge issues about expanding legal rights for nonhuman animals".

It adds that both parties "will continue their respective work to achieve this goal".
