Dublin city council is to allow a mattress amnesty despite rejecting plans to reintroduce a free bulky waste collection service.

Households that have registered with the local authority can have up to three mattresses taken away for free from next week according to the Irish Times.

It comes after councillors were told to drop plans to bring back a free collection service for household waste like carpets and sofas. Council officials warned the move could incentivise "dumping tourism" and result in the EU prosecuting the state.

Public reps voted last year to allocate part of their budget to provide the service.

Councillors have told the paper the mattress collection is the same thing and legitimises reintroducing the service for larger items.
