A man is due to be sentenced today for killing a boy in Tallaght by setting fire to his makeshift hut 13 years ago.

At an earlier sentence hearing, the court heard Dermot Griffin of Ballyfermot Road has a substantial criminal record spanning almost four decades.

Stephen Hughes was just 12 when his makeshift hut at Rossfield Avenue burned down in the early hours of September 1st 2001.

He'd been sleeping there with a friend who managed to escape the blaze.

Thirteen years have passed since Stephen's death but the man responsible was only convicted last month.

Dermot Griffin was found guilty of manslaughter and earlier this month, his sentence hearing heard he has a criminal record going as far back as 1977.

The judge requested more time to consider an appropriate sentence for this crime and he's due to find out what that is later this morning.
