A man with special needs is being treated for horrific head injures after an attack in a park on the northside of Dublin.

His sister has posted these photos on her Facebook page, and says she has others which are too graphic to show.

The victim, understood to be aged 30, was attacked in Fairview Park at around 7:45PM last night, Wednesday evening.

Gardai have confirmed to 98FM News that they are investigating the attack.

It's believed the man was jumped by a gang of three teenagers, who threatened to kill him and set him on fire.

The victim's sister wrote on her Facebook "Everyone who knows him knows he his a special needs adult an as gentle as they come wouldn't say boo."

"If anyone seen anything or hears anything let me know so I can pass it onto the Garda."

The victim, who is being treated for serious head injuries, had visited the park to watch some diggers at work.

Dublin's Lord Mayor has described the attack as "savagery, thuggery and cowardly" and says he hopes that "both the public and the Gardai make every effort to bring forward the cowards" responsible.

Christy Burke added, "I don't have the words to express what I think of the thugs who done that. I have no doubt and I would only hope, and I will contact the Superintendent in Clontarf, I only hope progress is being made of an early arrest."

Locals say the park has become a no-go area in the evening time, one man says "after certain hours you wouldn't use it, after it goes a bit dark at all you wouldn't use it. It's just not safe".

Anyone with information is asked to contact their local Garda station.
