A man who knocked down and killed a 50-year-old man in Swords has been jailed for six and a half years.

Desmond Collopy from Landen Road in Ballyfermot didn’t stop when he hit Eamon Cronin in August 2014.

The bank worker was crossing North Street in Swords to break up a fight when Mr. Collopy knocked him down in the early hours of August 16th 2014.

The 30-year-old was drunk at the wheel and a female passenger said he was "showing off" by driving fast and jerking the steering wheel.

He didn’t stop when he hit Mr. Cronin and continued drinking at a B&B in Palmerstown.

Jane Fitzsimons - Eamon Cronin's wife of 19 years - said she felt "complete and utter shock" when she heard her husband had been killed.

Judge Martin Nolan jailed him for six and a half years today and Eamon’s brother Sean says the sentence is of some comfort to the family:

"He was a very popular man, very well liked and a big loss to us all. I feel that justice has been done, there's a lengthy sentence".

Jane says her life has changed forever and she’ll forever miss the little things like dancing in the kitchen with her husband or looking up at the stars.

She too feels justice has been served saying it "brings closure, I'm OK as I say to people considering. What keeps me going is my faith in the Lord and my family, Eamon's family and my friends".
