A man has appeared in court charged with the stabbing of Dublin GAA star Jonny Cooper.

Mark Lavelle, with addresses at Basin Street, Dublin 8 and in Swinford, Co. Mayo is accused of attacking the footballer on Dorset Street last month.

Jonny Cooper had been on a night out with friends after a club game on Friday Sept 19th.

He was on his way home at around 5am the following morning when a man ran across the road and stabbed him in the head, face and neck.

The 24-year-old Na Fianna defender was treated for a total of 11 stab wounds.

Gardai made an appeal for witnesses on RTE's Crimecall a few days later but decided against showing some CCTV footage of the alleged attack because it was deemed too violent and distressing for broadcast.

Mark Lavelle was arrested in Dublin this morning and charged with assault causing harm to Mr. Cooper.

After the charge was put to him, Garda Les O'Rourke of Mountjoy Garda Station said he replied:

"I don’t remember anything. The government took my medical card. I was without my medication".

There was no application for bail today and the 31-year-old was remanded in custody for a week
