A Garda has been taken to hospital after being injured during this afternoon's massive protest against water charges.

The Riot Squad is on standby, as crowds continue to demonstrate around Merrion Square and other pockets of the City Centre.

Two people - who weren't part of the peaceful section of the protest - have been arrested for "minor public order offences".

The Garda Press Office says more than 30,000 have turned out, but the Right2Water group claims the true figure is more than 100,000.

People from Detroit in America - which is also fighting water charges - have landed in Dublin to join the demonstration.

The Environment Minister, Alan Kelly, says the government will not change its current water charge structure.

Merrion Square is the heart of the demonstration, but groups have also forced Gardai to close O'Connell Street  and O'Connell Bridge.
