Luas Green Line trams are getting bigger.

It's been announced that the first of 26 trams extended by 11.1 metres and is up and running on the green line.

The extension to the carriage means a 30% increase in passenger capacity on the tram from 319 to 408 people.

Over the course of the next 14 months, a further 25 trams will be extended.

Major Investment

Eight brand-new 55 metre trams are also expected to be delivered next year, all of which will have a passenger capacity of 408.

Seven such trams were introduced into the fleet last year.

It is hoped this programme of investment will go some way to ease the pressure on Luas Green Line services.

The number of journeys on Luas has increased from 30.5 million in 2013 to 41.8 million in 2018.

Commuter peak-time services on the Luas Green Line are in particularly high demand.
