Lidl has been given permission to start work on a major development in Ballymun.

The "North Quarter" will consist of a Lidl store with office space, car parking and two linked blocks of student accommodation.

The 364 bed student blocks will have 364 beds across six stories, as well as retail units and cafés.

Lidl Property Director, Alan Barry welcomed the permission granted by Dublin City Council.

"The new state of the art Lidl store will provide much needed additional retail provision for the community and the student accommodation blocks will help to satisfy some of the huge demand for purpose built student residences serving DCU and other third level colleges", he said.

If there are no planning objections, Lidl says it plans to begin works later this year.

Just last week the supermarket chain said it was "delighted" after getting permission to build a new concept store in Castleknock.
