The jury in the trial of a man accused of raping a woman with down syndrome in his Dublin flat, has been sent home for the night.

The man, who is from Pakistan, has pleaded not guilty.

The accused denies raping the woman in June 2013 but admits sexual contact saying it was consensual.

Earlier in the trial the accused told the court he had never heard of down syndrome before his arrest and people with special needs in his country are kept at home or in hospitals or wear badges to indicate their disability.

The court has also heard from 16 women who said they were approached by the accused in the area around the time of the alleged rape. The jury began their deliberations this morning.

This afternoon they asked to hear the accused’s cross examination and re -examination in the witness box again.

They’ve now been sent home for the night and will resume their deliberations in the morning.
