Gardaí are treating the incident as a murder suicide with Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan describing it as a ‘terrible tragedy’.
Garda Tony Golden was responding to a domestic disturbance in Mullach Álainn, Omeath when he and a woman who lived at the house were shot.
Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene while the woman was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious condition.
24 year old Adrian Crevan Mackin from Co Down also died from a gun shot wound.
He was on bail having been charged with membership of a dissident group in January.
The shooting comes less than three years after the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe from the same Division just a short distance away in Lordship.
Locals are remembering Garda Tony Golden as a dedicated officer and family man who is survived by his wife and three young children.
