St Laurence O’Toole’s CBS in the north inner city has come up with a way to help homeless children.
The school on Seville Place is providing almost 24 hour care with food, activities and transport all included. Latest statistics show around 1,800 schoolkids are currently homeless,
Mark Candon, Principal of St Laurence O’Toole’s says the school out on homework clubs, hired buses to take pupils to sporting events in GAA and soccer halls in a bid to keep the children from going back to a hotel room.
"We basically try and make sure as much as possible that the kids are engaged and active from the time the child's getting up in the morning", says Mark.
"That they're looked after, they do their schooling, they've somewhere to dfo their homework, they have an activity to go to, there's something to do".
"Our homeless rate in the school has been between 5 and 10 per cent for the last 5 years", he added.
