"A Desperately Sad Day" - Tributes Paid to Garda Killed Near Lainstown

The Garda Commissioner has paid tribute to one of his colleagues who was killed in the line of duty on Sunday.

Garda Kevin Flatley was conducting a speed check on the R132 at Lissenhall near Swords when he was hit by a motorcycle.

The 49-year-old father of two was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, was taken to Beaumont Hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said the everyone in the force is heartbroken by what's happened.

"This is a terrible loss for us all," he said, "My thoughts, and the thoughts of all personnel in An Garda Síochána, are with Kevin’s family and friends.

"We also think of Kevin’s colleagues at the Roads Policing Unit, Dublin Castle."

Assistant Commissioner of the Dublin Metropolitan Region, Paul Cleary said Kevin was a valued member of his community in Ballbriggan.

"He was very much involved in his own community where he lived out in Balbriggan," Cleary said, "[He was] a very well liked person, very well respected and [he's] a huge loss to our Garda family."

Tributes

The Taoiseach Micheál Martin and President Michael D. Higgins have both paid tribute to Garda Flatley.

Micheál Martin said, "Our gardai serve with courage and dedication each and every day to keep the public safe and to prevent crime."

"The loss of a Garda has a deep impact on society due to this strong connection and my thoughts are with his family and all those who knew and cared for Garda Flatley across his life," the President said.

Tánaiste Simon Harris said it's a tragic reminder of the risks Gardaí take everyday.

Meanwhile the Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan also expressed his shock and condolences to Kevin's family.

The General Secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors Ronan Clogher has asked people to keep his Garda colleagues in your thoughts.

GAA

Kevin was an active member of O'Dwyer's GAA Club in Balbriggan.

The chair of the club, Dave Rooney, said he was passionate particularly about hurling and camogie, "He was always positive, always had a smile on his face... always patient, always encouraging".

"I'd like to pass [on] my condolences and that of the club's to Úna, Erin, Aoife and his family, friends and colleagues," Rooney said, paying tribute to Garda Flatley's wife and daughters.

Appeal

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings are being urged to share it with investigators.

Officers are particularly interested in tracking the movements of a Yamaha R1 motorcycle in the vicinity between 12 noon and the time of the collision.
