The Government has backed a proposal to introduce medically supervised injection centres.

The landmark decision would allow addicts take their drugs under the close eyes of nurses and doctors.

For some this proposal is forward thinking but for others it will prove quite controversial.

If passed into law, it’ll mean drug users will be able to go into special centres and inject their drugs in a supervised setting.

The minister with responsibility for drugs strategy, Aodhan O Riordan, says the centres would provide help to addicts and could reduce overdoses.

The landmark proposal has received the backing of Senior Ministers so will now move to the next stage.

It’s believed the new centres would be introduce here in the city first with a pilot facility most likely to be set up in the drug rehabilitation centre at Merchants Quay.
