Dublin's Orwell Road, that's home to the Russian embassy, may not be changing to Independent Ukraine Road after all.

A motion due before Dublin City Council has been dropped over a lack of support from locals.

Last week a subcommittee of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown county council voted to start the process of renaming the road in Rathgar to Independent Ukraine Road as a gesture of solidarity.

The street also falls under Dublin city council's boundary and councillors from DCC were due to consider the proposal today but the motion from Labour's Dermot Lacey has been scrapped.

According to the Irish Times, he says a large number of residents are not in favour of the plan and he won't be proceeding with it. It's understood locals were concerned about the practicalities of the name change and the impact it would have on the likes of property deeds and maps.

Meanwhile, Councillor Peter O'Brien, who proposed the original motion, says while there will still be consultation with residents he doesn't expect a vote on the name change to go ahead.
