It's hard enough to secure your first home, but now its reported that the Environment Minister is considering giving grants to first-time house buyers.

The plans are targeting couples who live in cities and are struggling to meet the Central Bank's mortgage deposit rules.

The proposals being considered by the Labour Party would see Minister Alan Kelly direct urban local authorities to give cash grants to those struggling to get on to the property ladder.

It's believed that senior figures within the party support the idea which would likely form part of the Labour's General Election manifesto.

It comes amid growing speculation that new plans to tackle the mortgage arrears crisis will be unveiled by the coalition in the coming weeks.

A 21 year old man is due in court in Glasgow in connection with the death of Karen Buckley, more here.
