The Taoiseach and cabinet ministers are expected to agree an initial 5 million euro in emergency funding for areas affected by Storm Desmond this morning.

As the clean up continues and parts of the country brace themselves for more damage, cabinet ministers will discuss the Government's response to the crisis.

Ahead of today's briefing, Taoiseach Enda Kenny met with the Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin and Minister of State for the OPW Simon Harris.

Some details of the proposed flood package have emerged, it's understood to include 5 million euro in initial funding, but the situation will be monitored closely to see whether more is needed in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Storm Desmond claimed its first victim after the body of a pensioner swept away in a flood was found in County Monaghan.

The remains of 70-year-old Ivan Vaughan were discovered around 10 metres from his car yesterday morning.

It's thought he was returning to his home on Sunday night when he was swept away.
