Tech giant Google has said it is willing to help fund general housing in Dublin to ease the accommodation crisis.

The tech boom in the city has had a knock-on effect on housing affordability.

Google now employs 8,000 people in Dublin with staff salaries averaging close to €100,000.

The high salaries in city-based tech firms such as Google, Facebook, LinkedIn have seen lower-paid workers miss out on much of the available accommodation.

Google's chief executive Sundar Pichai said it's something the company would think about doing over time.

But he said the government would need to support the initiative too if it is to work.

The multinational is currently donating €910million for community housing in San Francisco aiming is to ease chronic housing costs there.
