The Garda Commissioner says she's hopeful that new facial recognition software adopted by the force will increase the identification of suspects.
Evo-fit differs from the previous system, because it supplies the witness with face types, rather than asking them to recall individual features.
That way witnesses and victims use recognition rather than just memory.
This morning, Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan was given a crash course in now the Garda’s new EvoFit system works.
Operators simply ask witnesses or victims to select from a database of faces and the fit then adds individual features like eyes, nose, mouth etc.
The system is widely used across the UK with one police force experiencing a 74pc increase in identification rates.
At the moment, the system is operated by just six officers at Garda HQ but it can be rolled out anywhere in Ireland within 24 hrs of a request.
