The Garda Representative Association is calling on the Government to provide special housing for rank and file members.

Its emerged that a small number of officers are sleeping in their cars to avoid long journeys home if they’re needed to appear in court after a late shift.

The association representing rank and file Gardai says pay rises within the force are now “long overdue” after members had their wages cut by 14 percent over the past six years.

Their ‘Pay Back Now’ campaign will be launched at their annual conference this morning.

Front line officers are also calling to be armed with taser guns to protect themselves in the event of a terrorist attack.

Stun guns are restricted to trained members of the armed response units.

But GRA President Dermot O’Brien says that’s need to change in case religious fundamentalists strike in Ireland..
