Gardaí say they don't have enough officers to tackle organised crime.

President of the Garda Representative Association, Dermot O'Brien, says they require further resources and that overtime is being used to disguise a staff shortage:

"Overtime is being thrown at the likes of these incidents and it masks up the fact that we don't have enough people on the ground."

He wants to see a regional support unit - which exist in other places around the country - established in the Dublin Metropolitan Region.

He added: "While you do have armed patrols, it wouldn't be up to the standard of what we would want and what we would require.

"The RSU are dedicated, armed back-up...they have one job and that's specifically to protect members of the force and members of the public."
