James Michael Tyler, the actor who played Gunther in Friends, has died aged 59.

Tyler was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago, and passed away at home in LA yesterday.

He appeared in 150 episodes of the hit sitcom Friends, as coffee shop manager Gunther - one of the most memorable and popular supporting characters in the show's lengthy run.

Several Friends stars were among the stars paying tribute to Tyler today.

In an Instagram post dedicated to the actor, Jennifer Aniston said: "Friends would not have been the same without you.

"Thank you for the laughter you brought to the show and to all of our lives. You will be so missed."

Courtney Cox wrote: "The size of gratitude you brought into the room and showed every day on set is the size of the gratitude I hold for having known you.

"Rest In peace James."

Lisa Kudrow added: "James Michael Tyler, we will miss you. Thank you for being there for us all."

James Michael Tyler is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno.

The actor appeared via video link on this year's Friends: The Reunion as he was unable to attend in person due to his illness.

He spoke publicly about his prostate cancer diagnosis shortly after the release of that special, urging other men to get screened and tested - saying he'd be happy if he could save even one life by speaking publicly about his own experience.
