There are fresh calls for a directly elected mayor for Dublin.
Labour MEP Aodhán Ó Ríordáin says a vote on creating the position should be held on the same day as people choose the country's next President. The election to replace Michael D Higgins will take place later this year.
The former TD says with four separate local authorities, there's no one person setting a vision for the capital.
"Cities compete globally for investment, talent, visitors, and attractions. Dublin is being left behind because of a political vacuum at the heart of decision making in our capital city. Dublin still lacks the political leadership and accountability that comes with a directly elected mayor."
A plebiscite, or vote, is needed to allow the position to be created. Aodhán Ó Ríordáin says the presidential election is the only opportunity to hold one over the next four years.
The Dublin Citizens’ Assembly voted in favour of creating a powerful mayor for the capital with wide-ranging responsibilities.
