A former Scout leader from Benburb Street has been jailed for sexually abusing six young boys in the 1970s and 80s.

David O’Brien, who’s now 63, abused them on camping trips in Dublin, Kilkenny and Cork.

In several of the harrowing victim impact reports handed into court today, David O’Brien’s victims described being suicidal throughout their lives.

One man called him a “coward and a paedophile” and accused the scouts of being “nothing more than a hunting ground for his depraved pleasure.

The court heard O’Brien would unzip their sleeping bags during camping trips and put his hand down their pyjamas.

He would also target certain boys, asking them to hang back with him while on a group walk and abusing them.

His lawyer said he’s led a somewhat “torturous existence” since the abuse and lives in a hostel in “social isolation”.

The Judge said he’d abused a position of trust and authority and jailed him for four and a half years.
