Low income households would have to spend a quarter of their budget to buy healthy food for their families each week.

The Government is being asked to spend one million euro next year tackling food poverty.

Over 13 percent of the population or 600 thousand people have experienced food poverty and many families don't buy healthier options because foods high in salt, fat and sugar are often cheaper.

Sinead Keenan of Healthy Food For All says there's been a large increase in the numbers struggling to keep healthy food on the table:
