Inspectors have voiced fire safety concerns about a former city council hostel that’s been taken over by housing activists.

The High Court order the inspection of the Bolt Hostel on Bolton Street last Tuesday after the Irish Housing Network started work on the building last month.

It took over an hour and a half for the team of four inspectors to carry out this high court order inspection of the Bolt Hostel.

Housing activists took over the former Dublin City Council hostel last month and have spent time cleaning it up and housing people who’ve been homeless.

Following the inspection, the team gave a brief outline of their concerns to the group.

John Rooney from the Irish Housing Network says the inspectors had one main concern.

"The basement of this building has no fire protection it it, so from looking at the basement it looks like Dublin City Council never put in any fire protection in the basement."

The group were also told to carry out safety work on the doors, which could breach the court order.

"Some of the doors are missing equipment so they don't close automatically. We've been told today we have to put hinges on those doors. The thing is there's a court order in place which means we can't do any work but we've been told that needs to be done today. "

A full list of issues is being emailed to the group later today, they’re due back in court on August 18th."
