Dublin's Litterbugs Aren't Paying Up

Dublin’s litterbugs are rubbish at paying their fines.

If a you're caught illegally dumping on the streets, you're given an on the spot fine of 150 Euro.

Dublin City Council handed out 1, 644 of those fines in 2014 but only 575 of them were paid.

The worst offenders were in the central city area.

The figures were given to Fianna Fail councillor Daithi De Roiste – he says the litter problem is damaging to the city.

“We all want to live and work in a clean city, I think that’s the most important thing. Tourists who want to come to this city want to see a clean city and at the moment we have enforcement going on, we have fines being issued but there seems to be a fall down in terms of collection.”

If a person fails to pay their fine, they’re taken to court where it could be bumped up to 3000 thousand euro.

Only 41 people were prosecuted in 2014 and Daithi says there’s no incentive for people to stop dumping.

“Those who are caught dumping, those who are illegally dumping right across this city, once they’re caught, if nothing happens to them, they’re going to do it again and again and again because they know they’re getting away with it and this needs to stop”.

Dublin City Council are putting together a new litter management plan, it’s not due to be published until later this year.
