A man has been jailed for five and a half years for killing another man in Inchicore with a single punch.

Liam Bennett died from a severe brain injury after banging his head off the ground just over a year ago.

Alan Hatch of South Circular Road, Kilmainham delivered the fatal punch as the two men were walking along Tyrconnell Road on August 1st last.

He said he reacted after Liam Bennett tried to elbow him.

His victim banged his head off the ground and died in hospital from a severe brain injury a week later.

Following his arrest, Hatch admitted hitting him in the face. He described it as "the perfect punch" - one he wouldn't be able to deliver again.

A post mortem revealed Mr. Bennett had an "eggshell skull" so the injury would have affected him more than somebody with a thicker skull.

Despite that, Judge Mary Ellen Ring said he'd still be alive if the accused just turned the other cheek and walked away from the situation.

She then handed down a six and a half year sentence but suspended the final 12 months.
