A Danish planning expert has deemed Dublin too motorist friendly.

Urbanist Jan Gehl said Dublin must stop making motorists happy and pedestrians miserable.

The renonwed urban planner was invited to speak at a talk organised by the Irish Planning Institute on liveable cities.

He sais that not one of the 35 most liveable cities in the world were in Britain or its former colonies because traffic planners have been allowed to exert undue influence.

Gehl said Dublin needs 'thousands more seats or park benches in the city centre' and needed to 'remove parking spaces, revert to two-way streets and make things more difficult for motorists'.

Gehl also says a fundamental characteristic of a civilised city was that 'you can get along, get across and get around'

His ideas have been adopted in new York which has a vigourous cycling culture.
