The Drugs Minister isn't too keen on the idea of introducing drug testing kits at clubs and festivals.

Earlier this week, the Health Minister said he is giving serious consideration to allowing people check pills and powders for any lethal substances.

Leo Varadkar said he was looking at sanctioning the use of drug testing kits in nightclubs and festivals, following the death of Alex Ryan in Cork. It's understood the teenager died after taking a synthetic drug known as 'N-Bomb' at a house party.

Speaking to 98FM News today, the Drugs Minister, Aodhan O’Riordan said he doesn’t believe testing kits are the right way to combat dangerous substances "I wouldn't want to have a situation where people test a pill, give the all-clear to use it, and then have fatal consequences".

Minister O’Riordan's concerns are being shared by the head of a lab in Wales, that has been testing drugs including 2C and Ecstasy to see how pure they are.

Josie Smith says club tests can’t be guaranteed "there's a danger there that safety will be assumed. The drugs are evolving and there are often a number of drugs in one compound and testing kits won't be able to tease that out".

Today's comments come amid fears that the lethal N-Bomb drug is still in circulation.
