Over a thousand drivers have avoided a conviction and penalty points because they've donated to charity.

The Department of Justice has confirmed the figures to the Irish Examiner.

This happens when a judge lets a motorist give money to the court's poor box in place of a conviction or points.

Those drivers are less likely to clock up 12 penalty points, which would see them being put off the road.
