A homeless man in Dublin has become the first person to find shelter for himself and his pet dog.
It’s part of a pilot project between the Dublin Simon Community and Dog’s trust.
The programme was launched because a number of homeless people won’t go into accommodation as they don’t want to abandon their pets.
The project has resulted in a homeless man and his dog finding somewhere to stay with Demise Hyland and Millie moving into sheltered accommodation before Christmas.
Dogs Trust provided free preventative treatments for Millie such as vaccinations, flea and worming treatments and microchipping so that the Dublin Simon Community can allow the dog to stay overnight alongside her owner.
Dogs Trust says Millie’s presence has had a positive effect on everyone and is calling on other homeless organisations to look at the success of this project to help other pet owners find a suitable place to live.
