People who bought apartments in the docklands during the Celtic Tiger, which have fire safety issues, have been told they will have to cover the cost of fixing them.

Residents say they purchased homes at Longboat Quay in 'good faith' and feel they are 'victims'.

Over the past six months, a state-of-the-art fire alarm system has been installed which safety officers say has dealt with the threat to life.

But there are still 4 million euro worth of works needed to make sure that if a fire breaks out it can be contained in some way.

The owner of each apartment is being asked for up to €18,000, but Richard Eardley, who lives there and is with the management company, says that cost will more than likely be shared.

People living in Longboat Quay, whether they own their apt or are renting have been told the works shouldn't be too disruptive and they won't have to move out.

However, if someone doesn't stump up the cash fire safety officers won't let people stay and hundreds of people will have to leave, possibly as early as tomorrow.
