It's set to be a number of hours before storm Desmond vacates Ireland as torrential rain is continuing to batter the western coast.

Met Eireann has issued its highest weather warnings for all of Connacht, as well as counties Donegal, Clare and Kerry - where up to 60 millimetres of rain is forecast.

Drivers in Dublin are being warned against any unnecessary travel with flooding a factor on many roads throughout Ireland.

The conditions will improve tomorrow.

The ESB says 1,700 properties remain without power this evening.

The electricity provider says its crews will continue to work to restore supply this evening - for as long as it is safe to do so.

The company is urging members of the public who come across fallen power lines to at report the incident on 1850 372 999.

It says cables that have fallen in storms are highly dangerous and that it's best to avoid coming into contact with them.

Meanwhile in the UK - Police are investigating the death of an elderly man who's believed to have been blown by a gust of wind against the side of a moving bus.

Officers were called to reports of a collision this afternoon near to Finchley Central station in north London.

The 90-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
