Funding requests to upgrade sports halls in secondary schools are being refused.

The Irish Times reports a Department of Education document states it is 'not currently in a position to consider applications.'

PE is set to be introduced as a Leaving Cert subject in 80 schools this autumn.

16 of those schools are based in Dublin.

It's thought it would cost 450 million euro to upgrade all PE halls in secondary schools across the country.
